Therapy with a difference
The benefits of time spent being in the outdoors cannot be emphasised enough - being active, engaged or simply present in nature is proven to improve both mental and physical health.
But...sometimes we all need someone to talk to, someone to listen and support us. MHNW offer different therapy in nature options - but they all put you and your wellbeing at the heart of what we do.
Everyone at MHNW puts you at the heart of what we do.
Our lead instructor Kelvyn James is an International Mountain Leader (so you'll be physically safe) qualified in the use of counselling skills (so you'll emotionally safe) & a lot of fun to be around - so you'll have a good time - even when times aren't good.
Everyone who works with us will be a minimum mountain leader and first aid for mental health qualified - we also have an excellent referral network if we're not the right fit for you.

These are walks with a theme - we run a program of these throughout the year. Group sizes are deliberately small to allow for more interaction and support.
Typical walks include:
- Engage with nature - head somewhere special to see the seasons change, learn about wildflowers, get away from it all. In doing so you'll reconnect with your inner calm.
- Mindful Moments. We won't go far and it won't be difficult. But...we will pause and ponder, practice some simple mindfulness exercises and reconnect with the world and ourselves.
- Off the beaten track. A series of walks that visit seldom seen places. Our aim is to move away from the places of people, to reconnect with the idea of wilderness, to understand we can thrive within ourselves.

When we're in nature our senses come alive - our mind expands to accommodate new information - it's the ideal time to have the conversations that matter.
We don't have to walk far & it doesn't have to be hard (we'll totally let you set the pace) - but walking & talking therapy is an excellent way to begin a journey to a new you.
You'll be walking with a qualified mountain professional - so safety is a given. But you'll also be with a trained counsellor. We have an integrative approach which blends person centred with elements of CBT - you are at the heart of the day.
The aim isn't a physical challenge - the aim is to have what we hope will be one of many better days to come.
All Walk & Talk sessions require a confidential free telephone or video consultation so we can discuss exactly what you're looking for from the day.
1:1 sessions in a natural environment
You may feel you're not ready for a half or full day Walk & Talk session - or after a day out you might decide some shorter more frequent sessions might help.
We're able to offer shorter 1:1 sessions midweek. We can either walk from our base on a choice of several lovely loops in the Westmorland Dales - or sessions can take place by the log fire in our Shepherd's Hut looking into the woods.
Whichever option suits best you & nature will still be at the heart of the process. We aim to incorporate person centred and CBT theories into our counselling. We don't diagnose, treat or label you - we support, help and believe in you.
Typically sessions are booked in six at a time and last an hour - allowing for arrival and goodbyes, walking and talking time is approx 50mins. . Currently we offer 1:1 sessions on Tuesdays & Wednesdays - other days or evening sessions are occasionally available.
Mental Health NW also offer a range of bespoke (topic specific) courses and we can also work with clients to put into place a range of best practices for a healthy workplace.
